SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING PLAN WORKSHEET
This
worksheet will help you sketch out a Social Media Marketing Plan. It should become the basis of your plan.
Download it. Fill in the blanks and deliver it to me at the specified due date.
You will have a chance to revise based on my comments once before you begin
implementation.
To
achieve success in using social media, a business, nonprofit organization or
cause must use the tools and media sites strategically and have a plan in place
before doing anything. A Social Media
Marketing Plan is usually developed in conjunction with an overall
Marketing Plan. You are not required to do a complete
a Marketing Plan for this course, but it may help you to learn the key elements
of a marketing plan. Those resources are listed in our other class document
“Traditional and Social Media Marketing Plans” filed in BlackBoard. It may be
interesting to note that some larger companies will combine the functions of
Communications (Public Relations) and Marketing and, therefore, will have a
plan for each function, and social media may fall under both or one or the
other. Smaller companies and
organization may combine all these functions under “Communications” or
“Marketing”. Still other very large companies are spreading social media work
across ALL departments, beyond Communications and Marketing. Whatever the case,
a plan is necessary.
A
Social Media Marketing Plan and an overall Marketing Plan will draw from
the same important data: Who is your target market? Who are you trying to reach?
How can you best reach those people? What do you want those people to do once
you reach them?
Filling
out each of the following 10 steps as completely as possible will result in a
well-crafted Social Media Marketing Plan.
1)
Who
is your target audience?
To answer this question, you’ll
need to refer to your company or organization’s Marketing Plan and/or conduct
your own market research. You
may already have an idea about this, but if you do, please describe in your
plan how you came to understand who your target audience is and list any data
sources for this. List all the types of people your product or service
should reach.
A). Primary
research: You go
directly to the source to gather data or ask questions. Primary research
methods can include:
The Primary audience for Fox 25
Sports is men ages 15-35 that live in the New England area, specifically
central Massachusetts, southern New Hampshire, and parts of Vermont (see
diagram) and are sports fans.
B). Secondary research: Using
data that has been gathered and published by other researchers or sources. You
can get secondary research by:
Fox 25 Sports would also want to
reach female New England Sports fans in the central Massachusetts, southern New
Hampshire and Vermont area. Fox 25 Sports would eventually want to reach all
New England sports fans in the country.
According to the data, Fox 25
Sports did reach the male population, but the majority of our fans were women.
Of the 85 likes, women made up 52.7 % and the males made up 47.3%. The data is
not surprising based on the studies showing that women use Facebook more than
men. The demographic is Fox25 Sports was aiming for was men ages 15-35. As you
can see the majority of the 85 likes fell into the range of men ages 25-34. In
the age group of 25-34, males make up 34.5%. The females make up 25.5% of the
24-34 age-demographic. According to the Facebook insights, Fox 25 Sports did
reach the demographic they were aiming for.

When looking at
the where our fans are coming from, Fox 25 sports reached its goal of Central Massachusetts, Southern New Hampshire, and parts of Vermont. The table below
shows a wide range of places that our viewers are from. The Fox 25 Sports page
reached Texas, Connecticut, Canada, New York and Tennessee.

What are your business goals for using social media?
Some goals you might consider include:
Fox 25 Sports has a few goals, our goals include…
1.
Improve awareness
2.
Encourage interaction on our new social media sites
3.
Educate New England sports fans on all news surrounding all New
England sports.
I think I met the goals that were set. The Fox 25 sports
Facebook page reached 85 people. Although we did encourage interaction, we only
got people to “like” the pictures and the posts, but no one really commented on
the posts. The Fox 25 Sports fans were educated about the local sports through
articles and posts. We tried to give our fans pictures of the interviews and
practices.
3.
For each goal you’ve listed above, be as specific as
possible in answering each of these questions:

Fox 25 Sports
achieved its goals. Fox 25 Sports, ended with 85 Facebook likes, and 79 Twitter
followers. Some different tactics that were taken on the Twitter site (@Fox25sports) was live tweeting,
tweeting about trending topics, and pictures. The live tweeting was not very
successful, Fox 25 Sports lost followers. Tweeting on trending topics did help
gain followers and tweeting pictures also helped when finding followers.
The Facebook page (Fox 25 Sports)
was a different field. Fox 25 Sports tried to post stories off of ESPN Boston.
Fox 25 Sports also posted pictures from practices and the locker-room
interviews. The pictures were a success, people really liked to see the behind
the scenes images. Fox 25 Sports also uploaded some videos from High School
Game day (a segment on the show) that would get people excited for the
Thanksgiving special. Fox 25 Sports also tried to encourage interaction with
posts by posting posts with components, but that did not work out well. Most
sports fans like the keep it stupid, keep it simple mentality. When we switched
the posts to shorter, people liked the more posts.
4.
What are the preferred media by your target
market(s)? For example:
Your answers to these questions
may be part “gut feeling” and part “intuition”, but you MUST find data or
information to back up your claim. Please include links to any data you have
used to inform your answer here.
Pew Internet and American Life
Project: http://ww.pewinternet.org
According to the Pew internet reports, Twitter is the most used social
media amongst young people. Facebook is
also the used in older crowds, and a good way to encourage interaction for
fans.
Fox 25 Sports really used the Facebook page. For sports fans the layout
of Facebook seemed more efficient. The Facebook page had more of an audience
with 85 people while Twitter only had an audience of 79. This could have been
because the anchor Brendan Fitzgerald had his own Twitter page. Brendan’s
Twitter page had a bigger audience than the Fox 25 Sports Twitter account. I
also believe that the failure to update the Twitter and Facebook account had
something to do the lack of interactions. The lack of consistency did not work
in Fox 25 Sports favor.
5.
Message development
Message development is the key driver of whatever
content you might create in your social media campaign. It is how you will know
what to write or create on your social media sites. For example, if one of your
key messages is “Binge drinking kills young adults”, you will then be able to
craft that message creatively to different audiences (parents, teachers, young
adults, law enforcement).
Fox 25 Sports has
one key message; we are local people covering local sports on all levels,
professional, college and high school.

We had the Anchor and Producer's update the social media sites. When the anchor and producers remembered to update the sites, they got attention. I was also updating the sites, but because I made some human errors due to rushing, my privileges were revoked. I tried to as if there was a way for me to send in posts and get them approved, but that did not get to far. The other interns did not have access to the sites.
I was required to look at the top sports stories, but re-posting other people's work did not seem to get much attention to the site. When taking pictures of practices I had attended and uploading cool videos, worked better. Finding stories that were interesting vs stats also seemed to work. We also did not use Hootsuite, although I think it might have helped. Like I said before the social media was always an after thought.

During game days
|
There were many
challenges faced when meeting the deadlines. Some of the challenges were
posting daily, and live tweeting. Posting daily was a challenge because I was
not working for Fox daily, and the other interns were not responsible for
posting. As for the anchor (Brendan) and the Producer (Chad and Mike), the
social media was at the bottom of the list of thing that needed to be done for
the show. There were only so many stories that were interesting to post,
without repeating, and going out to gather pictures was a last thought.
Another challenged
I faced was rushing to post. I would not take my time and proof read everything
and because of that errors were made. Due to the errors that were made, I was
demoted and not allowed to post. Which lead to a lack of posting.
The live tweeting
during games was a challenge. During games, interns are required to log the games,
which mean paying attention to everything that happens during the game. Trying
to do live Tweets and all the other work during the games was not a success. We
only did the live tweeting once. Tweeting during the games and trying to be
first made was too difficult, and it lead to errors. I will say that Brendan
(the Anchor) would live tweet on his own account, and tag the Fox 25 Sports
page, but the Fox 25 Sports social media was always an afterthought.

When Fox 25 Sports posted to
Facebook, we did not get much of a reaction. The posts that did get people to
click the like button were pictures and videos. On October 9, 2012 we posted a
video link to get people ready for Thanksgiving and High School Game day October 19
As you can see we only got one
like, out of the 39 people that saw this link.
Another link that was liked was a video we posted showing a hit Wes
Welker from the Patriots took. October 15
#Ouch
Some other posts that got attention
were stories about football. The Patriots lost to the Seahawks and highlights
from the game were on an ESPN Boston website. The highlights I later posted got
a few likes.
Fox 25 Sports shared a link.
The Seahawks rally to upset the
Patriots in the final minutes of the game. http://sports.espn.go.com/boston/nfl/recap?gameId=321014026
Other posts that did not have any sort of topic, and were just articles that went to the Fox 25 website did not get any attention. For example the post below.
Fox 25 Sports shared a link.
I think that a lot of our
problem was that the Fox 25 news station had its own Facebook page and the
sports department are responsible for the question of the day on the site.
Since the home Facebook page did not help promote the sports page, I feel this
had something to do with the littler interaction we got.
I also tried to take pictures from practices and games, but the managers of the site did not like putting the pictures up. Again I say updating the social media was last on the list of things to do, and the other interns were no help. I also feel that the anchor Brendan updated his page more than he tried to grow popularity for the sports page.
I had no control over the blog
pages, but I do know the freelance producer likes to write and put up a few
stories. Those stories did not have make it onto the Facebook or Twitter either
and I do not have access to see how well they did on the website.

I ended up focusing mainly on the Facebook
page. The Twitter page was mainly updated by the anchor and the producer. The
anchor and producers had a function that is they hashtagged Fox25sport, then
their personal tweets would be send out as a sports tweet. Some of the problems
I faced were being switched off of the posting field. I had rushed a lot while
posting and made many human errors. I
had asked them about getting posts approved, but there was no time for that.
Another problem was remembering to have the producers and anchor update the
page I have said this before, posting to Facebook and Twitter was always a last
thought. It never seemed important. I think the fact there is a main Fox Boston
page and that was updated with sports articles, news stories, polls and other
material, that having just a sports page did not really compete. I think that
writing original content was also a struggle. I feel we always would just
repost stories other people wrote. When I went out to film audio I always took
pictures, but Brendan (anchor) did not think it was necessary to post them to
the page.
As for the Myfoxboston.com I know the
freelance producer wrote some stories about the Celtics and they had some
views, but I do not have access to any of that data.
10.
Determine how success will be measured. Will
you…
Take
advantage of the analytic packages available on the social networking sites.
These can show the number of people (“fans”) participating, etc. Blogs will
show you the number of page visits and views and which sites referred the
reader to the blog. Facebook Insights are available to users
(administrators) who maintain a page for an organization. Facebook Insights
allow the administrator to see demographic information and fan interactions
with the page over time. On Twitter, it’s possible to determine how many people
click through when you post a link.
Success
will be measured by gaining followers on Twitter and Likes on Facebook, by
getting retweeted or interactions on the pages. Any increase in any of the
social media numbers will be a success. Right now there is no Fox 25 Sports
Facebook page, and there are 11 followers on the Twitter page.
I feel
that we had success. We got 85 people liking our page in such a short period of
time. We also got 79 Twitter followers in that short amount of time as well.
What worked was videos, and pictures, and breaking news. Something that is hard
to report when you are not at every single event. The videos were short and
highlight, I think we posted two, one was a Youtube highlight (it did not have
much quality) and the other one was a highlight for High school game day that
was airing on Thanksgiving.
The Twitter page had some activity, but I think the
success was due to the fact that if Brendan or one of the producer’s hashtagged
Fox25 sport, then the tweet would also come out of the fox25 sports twitter
account. This gave the Fox 25 Sports account mentions. It also brought in some
viewers to our page. I think it both helped and hurt our audience.

During
the semester I began to write for a web site called Hergamelife.com . This
website is a female’s perspective on sports. I had gotten asked to write
articles about the Patriots. This was something I was very excited about. The
blogging platform was Wordpress.com and I was asked to write an article once a
week. When I first began to write, it was hard for me to establish my voice. The
posts I would do would only get 20-30 views. But as I began to write more and
find my voice, my posts began to get more and more views. Some of my more
popular articles were about the Patriots playing in London (379 views). The
article was titles England Meet the New England Patriots. Some other articles
that I wrote that got views were Sports and the Presidential election (239
views), Patriots: too close for comfort (233views), Patriots Adderall is not an
excuse (212 views) and the latest article was Patriots welcome a new member (177
views). I realized when I tried to sound like a sports announcer, I did not get
many views, but when I used my voice, the views have been going up. Another
feature that helped was adding my Twitter handle to the website. People like to
know you are human and connecting my Twitter helped out.
The
Blog is something that I have done on my own and am proud of. I write once a
week.
